It functions as an inhibitor of 1-deoxyxylulose-5-phosphate reductoisomerase (DXR), also known as 2-C-methyl-d-erythritol-4-phosphate synthase (MEP synthase). This enzyme is a key component of the non-mevalonate pathway for isoprenoid biosynthesis, which is essential for the survival of *Plasmodium falciparum* but absent in humans, making it an attractive target for drug development. Structurally, the compound binds to the fosmidomycin binding site of DXR, where its phosphonate groups engage in electrostatic interactions and its aromatic groups occupy a shallow hydrophobic pocket. It has primarily been utilized in X-ray crystallography and structural biology research to elucidate the binding mechanisms of DXR inhibitors.
